Assistant Director of Community Standards, UM Housing

The University of Montana invites applications for an Assistant Director of Community Standards. Under limited direction of the Associate Director of Residential Experience and Student Success, the Assistant Director manages day-to-day activities related to full-time and student staff supervision, the residential experience, crisis response, and student conduct and support in the residence halls and apartments. The Assistant Director also serves as a University community standards officer and, based on assignment, oversees most day-to-day aspects of the University community standards program for campus in collaboration with the Director. The Assistant Director works to develop positive, safe, and inclusive communities under the guidelines established in the University of Montana and UM Housing policies. As it relates to the position responsibilities, the Assistant Director has the authority to make commitments and policies that affect department operations.

The Assistant Director will be a member of the UM Housing Department Leadership Team and serve as a liaison between the student staff and the Leadership Team. In addition, the position will work with the Area Coordinators and Community Directors to manage and supervise the residential curriculum and social program endeavor in the residence halls and apartments; and develop, manage and coordinate living learning activities with campus partners with a goal of student retention.

Position duties include but are not limited to:

Serve as the senior Clery Compliance Officer for UM Housing, track Clery reportable crimes that happen on UM Housing property, compile and maintain the Campus Fire Log, compile, train, and log all CSAs (Campus Security Authorities) for UM Housing, and serve on the Clery Core Team for the campus

Oversee development and implementation of health and safety inspections policies, processes for enforcement, room and apartment inspections, and removal of prohibited items

Oversee development of crisis and on-call response procedures and related staff training, and the annual review and update of residence hall, University Villages, and Lewis and Clark Village policies and related publications

In collaboration with Executive Director and Director, take the lead on implementing case management and community standards processes both in and out of Housing

Serve as the primary hearing officer for University Community Standards cases, and oversee training and ongoing development of UM Housing community standards officers

Serve as a level five Maxient Administrator to the campus, and work in collaboration with the Director on the overall campus administration

Develop processes and procedures in Maxient to accurately and efficiently track and report on Community Standards cases and students of concern reports throughout Housing and Campus

Analyze student conduct trends and community impacts, direct UM Housing and Community Standards staff in student behavior management, and manage monthly, semester, and annual assessment and reporting efforts

Directly supervise full-time, Area Coordinators and Community Directors who oversee the paraprofessionals in the residence halls and apartments, and other staff as assigned based on functional areas of responsibility

Conduct research on national housing/community standards trends and/or ACUHO-I/ASCA standards and contrast with current department policy to determine long term, big picture goals, strategic planning, and oversight of human and financial resources

Oversee operational and administrative functions of daily residence hall and apartment management in assigned areas

Track follow up on students of concern in assigned areas to ensure timely outreach and updates as needed

Help facilitate all student staff trainings and take the lead in overall logistics of training series

Participate in an on-call duty rotation for the UM Housing community 365 days of the year and respond to situations as needed

Provide guidance to Lewis & Clark Office Manager and University Villages Office Manager related to departmental policies, student conduct incidents and regulations, and hiring procedures

Any tasks or responsibilities assigned at the discretion of the Director or Executive Director.

Upon completion of training, the incumbent will have working knowledge, experience, and ability in:

Updating the department website utilizing Cascade Management Software.

Administering surveys through Campus Labs.

Serving as one of the primary contacts for student, resident, parent, or community issues and concerns pertaining to any facet of the residence halls and apartments at the University of Montana.

Assessing the needs of residents to provide diversified community living experiences for residents and promoting learning experiences.

Participating in the annual department budgeting process to plan the unit’s work with capital projects, upgrades, facilities, maintenance, custodial projects, and other renovation projects, particularly in how they will impact the live-in staff.

Developing policies and practices, jointly solving problems and implement student services aspects of residence hall maintenance, cleaning, and construction.

Knowledge of the Clery Act and associated University of Montana policies and procedures.

Operational understanding of Maxient student conduct database, how it is currently utilized across campus, and an ability to suggest and coordinator improvements.

Operational understanding of StarRez Housing Management system as it impacts areas of responsibility, an ability to update and maintain modules directly connected to areas of responsibility, and an ability to build, update, and utilize advanced reports from the system.

Position Details

Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, Letter of Appointment and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package

Salary for this position is $60,000 - $64,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.

Required Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel Administration, Public Administration or Counseling and four (4) years progressive experience in Housing management, community standards/student conduct position, or a comparable position, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Strong knowledge of Housing and/or Community Standards and student personnel administration, student staff training and supervision, and diversity issues common within University Housing and Community Standards organizations.

Ability to understand and utilize new technology within the office; establish, maintain, process and update electronic and paper files, records, and documents; Microsoft Office, Maxient, StarRez, or other database, spreadsheets, etc., for data viewing, collection and entry

An overall understanding of the University of Montana’s mission, program, and policies.

Possess a thorough ability to communicate with a wide variety of people in a precise and professional manner, both orally, electronically, and through written word.

Ability to maintain an organized workload requiring multitasking and the need to prioritize various responsibilities with little supervision.

Ability to coordinate work schedules with staff, students, faculty, guests, and visitors to ensure that both customer and building needs are met.

Ability to formulate and enforce policies, complete departmental strategic planning, and assist with development of short- and long-term goals within the UM Housing operation.

Familiarity with department safety and security systems, including fire safety systems, and train live-in staff on proper use and emergency response procedures

Ability and willingness to participate in an on-call duty rotation for the UM Housing community 365 days of the year and respond to situations as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with conference housing programs

Experience with analyzing and resolving conflict, team building, group dynamics, crisis management, and the ability for problem solving

Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and to delegate those tasks to others

Ability to communicate effectively in a training mode to employees being supervised

Ability to evaluate applicants and hire staff; ability to evaluate and communicate with staff about job performance

Ability to work nights and weekends during certain times of the year and respond to emergency situations as needed

Ability to provide leadership for staff in responding to student quality of life issues, enforcement of departmental policies and procedures, coordination of services, and responses to crises and emergencies.
