Associate Self-help Attorney

Duties: The candidate provides legal services and legal information to self-represented litigants in support of the Los Angeles Superior Court's Self-Help programs, which may include some work in courtrooms in session. Uses training in applicable laws and understanding of the legal system to provide legal and procedural assistance to self-represented litigants in a variety of legal matters. Provides legal guidance and direction to the Court's non-lawyer Self-Help staff and provides work review of documents and forms they generate. May also assist with special projects to benefit the Court's Self-Help initiatives, such as the development of informational materials and presentations, participation in work groups to automate Court processes, and analysis of legislation, policies, and procedures affecting Self-Help programs. Provides information and educational materials to the public regarding court rules and procedures; reviews court documents with self-represented parties and explains legal options; assists with the preparation of legal documents; screens cases, and refers to outside agencies if necessary; and disburses legal documents to self-represented parties. Reviews legal documents and forms for completeness and procedural compliance with specific requirements set forth in applicable legal codes; provides guidance and assistance to non-lawyer court staff to determine appropriate procedures and applicable forms and documents needed; and reviews, for technical accuracy, the work performed by Paralegals and assigned staff. Collects information from parties and the court and performs legal research to determine the appropriate legal procedures. Delivers workshops to self-represented litigants to identify, explain, and summarize relevant laws and applicable legal procedures. Answers questions from self-represented litigants to help them understand how legal issues apply to their individual cases. Assists in the supervision of JusticeCorps members, graduate fellows, and other volunteers. Monitors performance of non-lawyer Self-Help staff and provides feedback to Self-Help supervisors and managers to help with performance improvement and development of Self-Help staff. Assists with the development of electronic and other educational materials for self-represented litigants concerning the law and procedures. Uses legal expertise to assist the court's efforts to automate court processes and expand the availability and efficiency of self-help services through the use of technology. Maintains directories and provides referrals to other court-based services, lawyer referral services, legal service providers, and other community agencies. Assists in developing and implementing policies and procedures for Self-Help programs, consistent with legal, court, and departmental requirements. Assists in developing Bar and community outreach programs for unrepresented and financially disadvantaged litigants. Performs community outreach activities to inform the public of the services offered. Assists in the review and analysis of legislation, statutory mandates, Rules of Court, and applicable law related to self-represented litigants. Performs legal research. Provides backup clerical and administrative support to assist with daily Self-Help operations. Assists with statistical reporting of Self-Help unit activities for the purpose of reporting information, such as the number of parties assisted and the number/type of documents completed. Accesses case management systems to retrieve case information for the purpose of identifying case status. Prepares reports and responds to correspondence from incarcerated litigants. Determines case status with limited information and provides instructions, forms, and/or referrals. Attends staff meetings, departmental training sessions, and various in-service training programs. Performs other court-related duties as assigned.
